If we are allowing crooked politicians the right to determine our morals, does this make the voters just as corrupt as the politicians?

Are we a civilized society, or just a messed up mentality with no morals?

I agree, morals or sexual preferences have no place in our laws. If we go there, we may as well hand out membership cards to the US Taliban~!

The dream is that we are a civil society and people become corrupted from the abuse of power. The reality is that, for the most part, we have lost our morals and are sinking further and further away from being just and moral. There is no concept today as manners in America and, as a teacher, I see this in the classroom everyday.

The students have no idea of bettering themselves or even what is polite and the proper way to treat someone older and the taking on of responsibility. Most young people don't and the world is a wake up call that people need to start realizing is there. It becomes worse each year I teach.

Why do you just object to the interference of "crooked" politicians? Would you prefer to have your behavior governed by "well intentioned politicians" or even "honest" ones?

Actually, there are some basic levels of behavior that we expect our governments to enforce. When it comes to morals, you probably want your government to pass laws regarding child molestation, spousal abuse, property rights and even the operation of motor vehicles. The enforcement of laws that comply with prevailing moral standards is the basis of civilization.

In the best of all possible worlds, we would all behave in such a way that we did not offend the moral sensibilities of others. Unfortunately, as long as there is diversity of thought and customs, there will always be some who object to the behavior of others. The political process is probably the sanest way for them to express their feelings and attempt to effect some restrictions to make society function.

I think we are a society who is more worried about how is having the best week ever or the next american idol. If we worried about getting out of debt, being less selfish and just taking the time to slow down and think things through, we might choose better leaders for our communities.

I would say our society still has a good heart (we love freedom even if most of us are brainwashed as to what that means). Unfortunately, we also have some self inflicted wounds that won't heal until we get someone to really clean house at the very top. Mainstream Media's propaganda network isn't helping though.

No. Many are adults that don't know the meaning of morals in the first place. They are not seeking anyone or anything to determine something that they don't have.

We choose how to behave. We certainly do not need politicians to dictate our behaviour.

We, the people are not necessarily the government.
