This really depends on your budget. As mentioned above, Venice can be VERY expensive, especially during the high season May-Aug.
You can do it on as little as $50/day/person (although $100 is much more reasonable), or go travel like a celebrity. I'm assuming since you're asking about money, you're on a budget like most of us hardy travelers.
Couple ways to keep costs down:
Spend money to save money. Seriously, GO BUY A TRAVEL GUIDE!!! So many people don't fork out the $25 for a good guide and then don't have as good of a trip because they aren't informed, and end wasting time/money. A good guide is REALLY worth the money. I suggest Rick Steves' Venice, as well as his EXCELLENT website for travel tips and suggestions. He's never done me wrong, and I travel A LOT. You'll get the inside scoops of one of the best in the biz on the places to stay, eat, and see...as well as how to avoid the lines so you maximize your sights.

In general for venice...Stay in a hostel or budget hotel that isn't right in the middle of the city. There are a several really good hotels that are in the Cannaregio area, near the train station. Venice isn't that big, so staying in a place that requires a 15-minute walk can save you a lot, and will help burn off the food and wine. If you save money on accomodation, you can spend it on shipping Venetian masks home. BUT BOOK EARLY!!!! Start looking now. Again, a good travel guide will have good suggestions and contact info.
Invest in the Venice card which will give you good discounts to several museums. www.venicecard.it You get free use of the public toilets (otherwise $1.50), rides on the vaporettie (public canal transportation), etc.
Oh, and don't bother with the gondolas during the day. Venice is meant to be seen at night, do the gondola thing there and don't cringe at the price. It's worth the splurge.
Hope this helps!

i am from venice! damiti miss it! anyway this is what you should do. you need to find an hotel in MESTRE VIALE GARIBALDI .
or look for MESTRE TRAIN STATION HOTELS. They are way cheaper then the venice one and with the bus you gonna take only 15 minuts to get to venice.
Hotels will cost at least 90 dollars a night. Restaurant are expencive so go eat to mc donalds or find a super market in mestre and buy some sandwiches..everything is expencive in venice.Even water bottles. Gondola cost from 80 euro to 250 it depends where u wanna go. Venice boats cost 5 euroo to 12.
if you follow what i said you will save money.
HOTEL IN MESTRE
BRING FOOD FROM MESTRE AND WATER
DON'T BUY FOOD IN VENICE..JUST LOOK AROUND AND PAY FOR MUSEUM!
BUON VIAGGIO!!!

It depends on how you want to be there-the price range is dramatically different for someone staying at a hostel, eating simply from outdoor markets and walking alot versus someone staying at a hotel, eating in restaurants and taking gondola rides. So, it can range from $200-$2,000 plus.
