McKenzie is a Scottish surname. The Mc part means "son of."

So, why on Earth would someone call their daughter McKenzie?

Thumbs up if you think that "McKenzie" is a "gay" first name.

"McKenzie" is the least of our problems. I work in a database that houses lots of names and the trend in this country seems to be make up a name or choose the dumbest thing you can think of.
Examples include (and I am not making these up)
Wacky, Seven(kid should sue Seinfeld), Average, Tedious, Please, Prince & Princess(usually w some other name thrown in Prince Jeremy for ex), Your highness, Ashley spelled is some long drawn out way, Raspberry, Cherry, Mister, My Guy, Precious(used to just be for cats), place names are also huge - Like Manchester (you know they have never been there), Rawanda(lovely country if you like genocide), Bronx (again w the genocide), Manhattan, Boston - are you getting the point!

I totally agree with you that it's a stupid name. I don't understand why some people here are whining about that. I mean, c'mon. It's a totally ignorant thing to name a girl McKenzie. You have to think beyond just how it "sounds." God. Really.

I didn't even realize how many people name their kids that.

To see these people here defending that sort of name as a first name, is just bonkers.

I don't find it quite right that you said the word "gay" (obviously meaning "lame" or "tacky"), but I see where you're coming from.

Even the common use of the word "gay", meaning homosexual, has got to be questioned here. McKenzie? For a girl? So, you're saying she looks like some Scottish man? Or is it that you want to be reminded of McDonald's whenever you see the kid?

Sad.

C'mon, people. You've got to go beyond "they like it" or "they like the sound."

What if you met someone from whatever non-English-speaking country one or some of your ancestors come from and they named their kid Fruitcake or Rugrat or Terminator, or some other word they heard? "We like the sound, so we named our child that." It's just as valid.

You've got to think of a child's name beyond simple preferences in the way something sounds. I agree that the sound of a name is very important, but at least do a little thinking about it. Give your child the respect of a name that was given a little more consideration.

Get out of your little bubble world and don't be so arrogant as to think you should call your kid whatever the hell you want to.

I agree. I don't like the name McKenzie. But, hey, that's me. The little girl probably grows up being called 'Mac' anyway.

And, also, the original spelling of the name 'McKayla' was 'Michaela.' I've never seen McKayla spelled that way, and I've known quite a few of them.

You know what, I am SO ashamed of every single one of you that had something nasty to say about people and the names they choose for their children. I don't know how many of you are from the United States of America and how many of you are not, but that is one of the reasons why we live here. FREEDOM OF CHOICE!

If a couple, or even a single person decides to have a child, then we should be praising them for being able to make such a commitment. They shouldn't have to deal with the scrutiny of others, and they should be able to choose ANY name that they want, regardless of its meaning or origin.

How would anyone of you feel if there was a woman reading this blog and had her heart set on McKenzie since she was a little girl? I'm going to take a guess here from your original comments and say that none of you would care but you should.

I hope that all of you out there that haven't had children yet, when you finally do decide to have kids, I hope the name you pick is put under the microscope as much as you have done so today, and I hope that people make you feel like an idiot for your choice in names.

surnames as first names doesn't really seem to be something that people should be worrying about. Courtney started out as a last name, and look at it now.... i'm just saying that some names can work as both, don' t worry about it. you obviously didn't name your child that, so why does it matter to you?

It's a cute name. If you don't like it, don't name your child McKenzie.

Personally I don't like it but I could care less if other people use it. Unless it is your child you have no say in what others name their children. You are just mean for saying the name is "gay". It doesn't mean "gay" so why call it gay?
