My stepson 16, cannot go to a regular high school because of some trouble he got in. He just came to live with us after not seeing him or him having anything to do with us for two years. He goes to an alternative school. When I drop him off in the morning-no one has winter coats on and all the kids are smoking on school grounds-even though the age to buy tobacco is 18 in Michigan. There are no books to bring home, no locker, no book bags allowed, and NO homework. It is like they make it easy on these kids because they can't conform. They have an OPEN campus for lunch, thus whoever has a car can drive away from the place and never return. I find that contradictory that they can't bring a bag with a lunch in it but can go out of the building for an hour or so.Are these schools effective???

It sounds like you need to find an alternative alternative school. My sister teaches at an alternative school, and I know that it is nothing like that.

Remember that as a guardian you have the right to sit in on a class or two at the school... I would request that. I would also suggest calling the police if you see under age smoking, ESPECIALLY if it is on school property.

These schools should still have a principal. Sit down and explain your concerns.

The books, bags, and homework may be security related issues. In CA, teachers are required by law to have a book for each student in the classroom.

Asking at risk kids to do homework can be a battle the teacher has chosen not to fight.

In any case, I would speak to the teachers and/or principals and voice your concern.

I think you said alternative - i didnt think you met bad.....haha sticking with original interpretation - The Roots featuring Cody Chestnut - The Seed. Good song with a strong guitar hook for alternative/rock music lovers.
