You mean how many hours per night or until what age? I saw my Pediatrician yesterday and told her that I felt guilty because my son sometimes sleeps in his carseat at night and he's 6 months old. She said fine. If that is where he sleeps best, let him sleep there. She said that there is zero evidence that it is harmful to a baby's growth, as long as during the day they get plenty of excercise... now, this is just ONE pediatrician, remember...She also told me that he will outgrow the seat, and just naturally want to sleep elsewhere... we'll see! I think he's fine as long as he's comfortable.

Car seats are not meant to be beds. In a car seat (especially when not in the correct recline degree) the neck is what is supporting the infants head. The PROBLEM is the neck is not developed enough to be supporting the infant's head (which is usually nearly half the child's weight). That is why the recline indicators are so important on the car seats and should never be used for more than carrying into out of buildings.

I am a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician ( aka CPS Tech) in the state of WI.

Your infant should sleep in a car seat at night. Your infant can fall asleep in the car seat and then be taken out right as soon as possible. Now if you have a carrier maybe that is what you mean. I have let my baby sleep at people homes in her carrier for a short time during visits but if she is home definitely place him or her in a bassinet. I am pretty sure you wouldn't want to be in a car seat for a long period of time while sleeping.

My son wouldn't sleep anywhere but his car seat for the first three months of his life. The doctor said it was fine and that he'd grow and get uncomfortable and let me know when he was ready to move to the crib. So I let him sleep in his car seat for as long as he wanted. At that time he was sleeping between 4-6 hours at a stretch.

If that's his only bed, then just let him sleep. However, as long as there's an alternative (even the floor is better), I'd get him out. Being strapped in a car seat not only delays development, it frustrates the baby and is bad for their backs. I let my baby sleep in a play pen (which folds up real nice for trips and outings) and that way, he can lay how he wants. He sleeps better and is happier when he wakes up.

But, for the record, we just got back from a roadtrip where he slept in the car seat the whole time. Like I said, you do what you gotta do. But it's better if he can get out of it.

There's nothing wrong with the car seat per se, except it is very bad for their heads. If the baby sleeps in a carseat all night every night he will get a flat spot on his head that can only be corrected by wearing a helmet.

Depends whether the infant is inside the car. If he is, so long as he is supervised by a parent and not sleeping for an oooveeerly long amount of time (your baby might not be sleeping), it should be fine. He'll wake up in his own time

I don't think the baby should sleep in the car seat at night at all...I think babies have to be able to move around and stretch out and they can't do that in a seat. Probably your baby likes the feel of something on either side of him, so try putting the baby in the crib with a couple of rolled up blankets on the side of him or try swaddling him in a blanket so he's warm and cozy.

Ever hear of bed sores? or diaper changes?
I suppose that a diaper change is due every 2-3 hours...that should be the max to sleep in a car seat or anywhere for that matter.

I can't remember when I saw this newscast but it was sometime around Christmas time...one of the major news stations (like CBS news or the like) had a report that leaving a child in a carseat for long periods of time can actually cause suffocation because their bodies are scrunched down and it decreases the amount of oxygen they can take in. According to the report, you are never supposed to leave a sleeping child in their car seat unless you are supervising them and can watch for signs that they are struggling to breathe. You might want to try an internet search to try to find that news report before you leave your child in his carseat for an extended period of time.
