Which is better and why?

As others have stated, both social workers and teachers are stressed out, underpaid, and underappreciated. I'd say teaching is better because of the vacation time.

I'm an ESL teacher, although part social worker too sometimes, dealing with my particular students! They often come to me for help with issues. I've helped a teen mother find daycare, gone with a student to court after he was arrested for driving without a license, and taken a student and his family to an immigration attorney.

I received my BSW eleven years ago. I have been working in Child Protective Services since then. However, I have just enrolled in a university to work on a BS in Elementary Ed. Social workers have an incredible turnover rate. It can be very rewarding but you must be willing appreciate the most minute progress. I would recommend Elementary Teacher. However, there is a definite need for social workers. You can work at Hospice or look into medical SW. Just meet with a social worker at an agency near you before you choose social work. You must become desensitized to the most heartbreaking situations and be prepared to accept "minimum living standards." There is not much worse than having to take kids from their family, even if it is the right thing to do. Think about it long and hard and pray. Good luck.

Elementary teacher or social worker, well i think in both these line of work you need to have almost the same kind of skills if you are to reach the children.
As a teacher you will have the opportunity to see and guide the young ones most as a group for a set time.

As a social worker you might be working more on a individual level and with more sensitive issues.

It would be nice if our societies where not in need of social workers so teachers could focus on teaching, wish full thinking from my side.

Both are very important !

I was a caseworker for a year before I could find a teaching job, both are stressful and low paying jobs. I know many social workers get burned out with in the first couple years, and often you are trying to help families who do not want helped. I am a teacher now, and of course it have its benefits (more stable work environment, the kids can be so much fun) but with inclusion and all the IEP paperwork, many teachers get burned out too. Sorry I am being so negative, I just want you to know how it really is, hard, emotionally draining (if you care for the people/kids you serve, often thankless, BUT extremely gratifying when you change some ones life for the better. Think long and hard before picking a major (I assumed you are picking a major for college). Honestly, I might not have majored in Special ed / Elem Ed, if i could go back and do it again. The paperwork, rude/crazy parents, paperwork, ever changing laws, PSSA testing, and the paperwork, really can get to me at times (like today! lol). I should add that I am a Special ed teacher, and if you noticed the kids are NOT the ones who stress me out! I love them and that part of my job!
