When I was little, my mom would chop onions, put them in my socks and make me wear them to "break a fever", it was pretty nasty and I dont remember if it worked or not, though she swares it did. She isnt an "Old Wife" but she likes all those old woves remedies, but she also thought that by making me puke, I'd get over a bug faster.

Is there any truth to these remedies?

If you are a patient in the hospital with a fever, they used to cover you up with warm blankets. Not so anymore. Now they will only let you have a sheet, no blankets. Don't worry too much about a fever of 99.8 on a baby. Do whatever your doctor advises you to do. But, do not overheat her with too many blankets and clothes.

As far as the medical world is concerned, onions in the socks really don't have any medical properties. None. As for puking...well it can get some of the bad stuff out, but still I don't recommend it.

I have never heard of that wow you must have stunk!! LOL
my mother would sponge rubbing alcohol & water on my face and arms and chest to break the fever but I'm sure it didn't work a fever usually breaks on it's own and it isn't a bad thing to have because it's fighting off whatever infection that is trying to invade your body.

A modern, safe and quick solution to break a fever is by summerging yourself, or even a child in a tub, under the shower for a few minutes.

I have never heard of putting onion in your socks, but I have heard of rubbing raw onion on your chest to help break up congestion.

I've heard of this, but don't know if it works...I do know that you can "sweat" out a fever and that by removing socks/covers from feet your body will cool down faster...it works for me

I have never heard of this before. If you can take Tylenol then that's what I would do or go to the doctor.
