A friend of mine had a normal period last month. Surprisingly she found out she's pregnant. She recalls being sexually active 5 days after having her period. So, is conception really possible so early?

Yes, Usually it is the 7Th to the 14Th day after the first day of your period. You will ovulate for 72 hours, somewhere in that time period. But, remember every body is different. So, her ovulation period could have started on The 5th day after the first day of her period. (the first day that she starts)Or if you are saying she got pregnant 5 days after her period was over than, yes this would be the right time. The doctor told me that you ovulate between the 7Th and 14Th day after the first day of period(the first day you start) so, If you start on the 1st then you will ovulate between the 7Th and the 14Th of the month it will be 72 hours somewhere in that time. This is what my ovulation period is. I have planned all three of my children this way. I really hope this has helped.

Totally possible. While the "normal" is 14 days, that is actually just a guide.

Stress, emotional upset or a life-changing event can cause a hormonal imbalance that will cause you to ovulate earlier...or later.
