it is a matter of historical fact that the only thing common about common sense is that it is now uncommon!
we seem to have lost the means to convey the basic knowledge of the art of life. this is something that requires a mentor to pass on, sad to say we have, for the most part, stopped passing on the knowledge of life. (or anything else :( )
common sense was derived over time from the application of daily life sciences, which we have long since stopped learning. Now, we just master examples of acceptable responses !

It seems to me that what passes for lack of common sense is basically a simple lack of education, or an excess of misinformation. Common sense is based on experience and knowledge; it doesn't exist in a vaccuum. If we spent more money educating our youth in logic, language, and the sciences, rather than wasting it on futile wars and the lining of politicians' pockets, there would be common sense in abundance.

Personal responsibility isn't a value since people can actually benefit from making their problem yours. Stupid, lazy, and irresponsible people are actually naturally selected for in our environment; ie, they reproduce successfully more often. Common sense, intelligence, and rational thought are not values within the American culture. Stupid people make the rich richer. Fortunately, most of the other industrialized nations still value intelligence.

Common sense has left the building. I don't know why, if I did I'd be rich after writing the book "Common sense: how to get it back."

Intelligence in general is in short supply, I'd love to meet someone in this world I could have an interesting conversation with.

Unfortunately, too many people of all ages, cultures, etc. have a type of mob mentality. For a lot of people it is easier to think like the "herd" than think for themselves.
