I have yet to find a free complete detection and removal spyware program. You could look on Microsoft website and see if they have one, tucows might have one. I had to break down and buy one, you can pick up Webroot Spyware cheap or download it.
If your good at computers you could scan your computer free online and use the info they provide to find and delete those affected files. Look online for the specific name shown ( whether it's a virus, trogan etc.) and see if there is a program that will delete these ones specifically. Make sure you know what your doing though and don't delete the wrong one (back up your computer first).
Personally I'd invest in a complete spyware, virus scanner, pop up blocker etc. only because I've grown tired of constantly re-installing the operating system after it's been infected and beyond repair.

Free? It's good to get a free program to do that, but I don't think you will. Most of these free programs are spyware themselves. You be careful not to confuse spyware with anti-virus software. Your question says spyware, but your detail says virus. Some software get rid of both, but it depends on what you want. You also may end up with spyware because if installing free software. I mean, that's why they're free in the first place. They are free so that you will think you're getting a good deal, but in the end, they spy on you and sometimes copy personal information from your computer. Why not buy a spyware and anti-virus in one. I use Zone Alarm but it wasn't free. It costs about $70 bucks at Office Depot, but it was worth it. When I use to use the free software, I use to have hell just the same. Also, be careful of the websites you visit as some websites are not safe. Good luck on your quest.

To get rid of viruses you need a virus protection program
For spyware, adware, etc.... I use SpyBot S&D (Search & Destroy)
It can be found on snapfiles.com
