I switched over to a Mac years ago and was much happier for it. It IS easier to use on the front end, it has almost no virus problems (although a few exist) and virtually every program you might want now has a Mac version, with few exceptions. Since OS X was implemented, the Unix shell has made itself well-known for stability; Unix is what many-to-most ISPs use. Macs use essentially the same tool bar and drop-down window system PCs do, so the learning curve is very shallow when you switch.
With the new Intel Macs, Windows can be used if you really want it. Apple hardware IS a bit more expensive, but in my overall experience, friends included, you get good bang-for-buck. Its very dependable. Peripherals like added hard disks are about the same price for both platforms. By the time you add enough RAM to reach 1.5-2 gb and consider the bundled software for audio and video you may want anyway, its on a par with a loaded PC.
The one lack is that Macs don't come with a defragmentation utility as Windows does, which is a bit annoying. A friend who WORKS at Apple says Disk Warrior is the ultimate tool for that and runs about $75 for Power Macs, $100 for Intels. Other than that, they're good machines. My nephew uses a PC and a Mac and he's finding the Mac to be much more friendly.
You should go with your gut and use what works for you personally, but speaking subjectively, Macs are less trouble in terms of housekeeping and need less protection from malicious outside intrusions. Any computer is what you make of it with your work habits, but I've been more than happy with the $1000 I paid for this one; its been worth 5 times as much to me compared with the $500 I paid for my first PC, because that sucker came with $10,000 worth of headaches, heh! Just read up on Macs and decide for yourself. Don't let me or anyone else sway you against your own better judgement. Good luck.

If you learned how to use a computer on a PC, you're not going to have an easy time of re-learning how to use a mac. It's almost too easy to use, and you don't have as many tweaking options with a mac. If you're going to be using it for graphics intensive programs, mac IS better, but if it's just going to be for regular home use, I would stick with the PC.
