I have my first appointment w/my OB in 2 weeks, so I was wondering if anyone heard that it was dangerous to eat cold cuts. My friend who has 2 kids says she heard they contain a perservative that was dangerous to the fetus. Thanks!

I think what your friend is talking about is that many clinics are now suggesting pregnant women stay away from deli or lunch style meats and soft cheeses. There is a small chance of the meats containing listerosis and that can make you and/or your baby sick if you happen eat infected meat.

If you do eat delistyle meats they are now suggesting heating it up until it steams and then it's OK to eat.

I asked my OB about this during my first pregnancy (2 years ago). He told me it was perfectly fine.

There are certain fish you should avoid that contain high levels of mercury, as well as bottom feeders - this includes all shell fish.

They say to avoid soft cheeses, but if they are pasteurized, you can have them. This is true for apple cider also.

One thing I thought was strange is that you cannot have anything with menthol when pregnant. I caught a cold and had sucked on a Hall's cough drop. My OB told me not to take them.

I would advise getting a book to help you answer a lot of your questions. I did not like "What To Expect When You're Expecting". In fact, my OB said to throw it out. I enjoyed "Your Pregnancy, Week By Week" by Glad Curtis and "The Girlfriend's Guide To Pregnancy" by Vicki Iovine.

Best wishes for a healthy pregnancy and baby.

I believe it is the risk of bacteria on cold cuts (and other prepared foods) that are sitting in a deli case, not a preservative. Most doctors will tell you not to worry about this. If you're concerned, heat up food such as deli food or leftovers thoroughly.

You may choose to avoid unpasteurized cheeses, rare meats, sushi, and raw apple juice. Note that I often hear to avoid Feta, but when I read the label of grocery store Feta cheese, I saw that it WAS pasteurized. My doctor said that in the 3rd trimester if I was craving sushi, to go ahead. Japanese women, of course, eat sushi throughout their pregnancy.

It is fine to eat cold cuts. Don't go crazy though. The salt in the meat, esp. ham, will cause you to retain water which can cause problems.
When I was pregnant I had about two ham sandwiches a day. I swelled right up. I got off the ham and the swelling decreased alot. This was in my third trimester though.

There is a small risk with cold cuts and things like hot dogs. Just make sure the deli meats are really fresh and the hot dogs are eaten really hot.

My doctor told me that anything is okay, BUT in moderation. For instance, for some reason I crave soda, and I was never really a soda drinker before I got pregnant, so I have soda once in a while to satisfy my craving, don't deprive yourself, but don't overdue it :)

whether beef in of itself is undesirable for you, if it replaced into cooked as quickly as this is fantastic. yet pigs have pus that comes out of there hooves, and worms too, if it will improve your urge for nutrition. :P

you can eat cold cuts. EVERYTHING you eat has some sort of preservative in it.
