Compatibility does not go by brand, it goes by the type of receiver and transmitter that you have. Each brand has had various models over the years. Also, some brands are the same unit with just a different name.
For example, some Craftsman were made by Chamberlin, others were not.
You WILL have to set the code either the new receiver or the existing transmitters (remotes) or both. That is not a variable, it is an absolute.
Most of the changes over the years have added security. There are therefore advantages to replacing the system, unless it is fairly new. If the old one is many years old, replacing both the receiver and the remotes will give you higher security.
If the wall switch is a key type it will work. If it is a keypad, it probably will work.
Just so everyone understands, you do not have to replace the opener itself. We are talking about a receiver and possibly remotes, that you buy separately to upgrade an older system. Obviously, they also have value if your receiver is broken.

If they are the same brand. Example craftsman you can train your remotes to the new opener The store where purchasing should be able to crossrefrence the remotes with the openers to ensure compatability.
