I'm going to college for Fall 07 and so until then I'm working to save some money, I start my new job at Sonic 2morrow. before Sonic I worked at McDonalds and freakin hated it! It wouldn't have been so bad but the managers were dumb. They wouldn't have enough people to cover the shifts yet they weren't grateful for the workers they did have, not to mention they have a poor way of training people. So to my fellow fast food workers what do you hate about fast food.

Swim mom, I agree with you on what you said about asking questions but you just don't get it, when its a lunch rush and you're struggleing, you CAN'T ask questions because the people who know the answers are "too busy" to help. It sucked at McDonalds!

Oh, come on food service is the best career EVER. There are so many things to love about it. Here are some of my favorites.
The oh so fashionable polyester attire they provide you with
The wonderful aroma of rancid oil that lingers on said attire
The charming customers that are always 100% satisfied with their orders
You get to buy about 18 pairs of sensible shoes each year
You can buy your pants in bulk quantities
Free food..........the same food...........every damn day
You never have to strain your brain figuring out how much your overtime will come out to because you'll never get any
What's not to love about smelling like an old french fry
And last but not least
You get to work when everyone else is..........going out to eat

I just wanted to say that I think it's funny how hourly workers always blame the management. Don't you know that employees in the food industry whether it's fast food or full service are generally very unreliable people. They were probably understaffed because employees didn't show up (sick, hungover, car broke down, etc.) I know owners of fast food restaurants and full service restaurants and they have a very hard time finding quality people that actually care about their jobs and can perform them efficiently. Let's face it, working in fast food isn't a rewarding job and most of the workers spend more time complaining about what they think should be done rather than doing anything to improve them. If the training program is substandard, ask questions and find a way to get the info you need to perform your job. I'm sure the resources are there, all people need is the desire to do their job the best they can. Unfortunately, most people perform minimally and spend the rest of the time complaining.
I just want to clarify that I don't think all fast food workers are unreliable. I really respect several of the workers that help me at local fast food restaurants. There's always a few that really shine and I admire them for working hard and always having that ready to help you smile on their face.

The mindless drudgery. At times there are things you can do to increase sales, and yet if it isn't what corporate states, then it cannot be done. When I worked at Taco Bell we had a police academy near by. Burger King gave a discount to all students & teachers, we did not. Thus the majority of the people went to BK instead. Corporate didn't want to lose 55 cents on a $5 order. Thus we lost about $ 600 a day in sales.

dont let your experiences of working in mcdonalds put you off, the thing about mcdonalds is that they have a high turnover of staff, a lot of the time its a case of if your face fits! it also depends on the management team, if you have a good team then mcdonalds is a sort of ok place to work. the thing is that most people who work for such places only do this for money and not a career so arnt really bothered or serious about their work. i worked as a manager for mcdonalds for 7yrs and it was quite ok but then the management team was shuffled about and i was then working with a bunch of imbaciles so i know. now work for pizza hut thats better!

The hours you worked would change on a daily basis. I hated that. I used to work at Subway and some days I'd work four hours, some days for eight and at different times everyday without prior notice (had to call in a day before and ask what time we had to get to work the following day). Ugh!

It is not that bad just some managers can be assholes and there is nothing we can do about it because we are just the employee and talking **** to the or about the manager can get us into some deep trouble. I'm doing what your doing i'm getting some experience here and then seeing where i can go from there. It is a good starter job but nothing long term.

I think the worst part of working in any of the food industry are the customers that just can't be nice, can't bend one bit. Customers at fast food places can be more obnoxious too.

ok apart from the hideous uniforms, there's the janitorial work as well. I had to mop floors and replace urinal pucks...nasty! There's always rude customers, it's like they believe they have a right to degrade you because you're young and working in fast food. The job itself isn't great-you're on your feet all day and you're hair ends up smelling like bacon fat. Good luck with it though!
