Wash them inside out and don't wash things with them that have a lot of lint...towels come immediately to mind. Dry them inside out too.

Wash them inside out. it will help. You will eventually get pills.

Wash them wrong-side outwards, it keeps them from pilling on the outside, then if you do have pilling, get a sweater shaver to remove it.

I don't think there is any way to avoid them. They are a result of cheap poorly made material. I have a few of these in my closet too!! :)
