Depends how long you've been seeing the girl friend.
But normally, legally a wife would be entitled to everything you have, unless you've made a nuptial agreement, whereas a girl friend is entitled to nothing.
Also, you can't expect the same from your girl friend and your wife, if you could take your wife to court and divorce her and even obtain an allowance if you have ground for it, whereas, again you couldn't with your girl friend.
So, unless you've been living together for a long time with your girlfriend, in which case it's just a question of words, because you would then treat her as your wife and expect the same treatment on would expect from a wife.
And also sharing the financial, and family matters as well.

There is really no difference. If you have a girlfriend that you live with (or not) and have been together for quite sometime, it's like she's your wife. The only difference is with marriage you are recognized in the eyes of the government as legally being together (marriage certificate). But, when you have a steady girlfriend and have been together for 10 years or more, you are considered to be common law married (in most states).

A piece of paper.
I never thought I would be a wife and was quite content to be a girlfriend. We did finally get married and it is still the same, nothing has changed. I married my best friend maybe that is why but I like it that way and would not change it for the world.

Wow this question is a tad stupid! To have a wife, you have to get married. When you get married it's supposed to be to the person you can't ever imagine you life without, not just a random. A girlfriend you can ditch whenever unless kids are involved, thats a little tougher.

You've made a commitment to your wife to love, honor and respect her through good times and bad. You've decided to spend the rest of your life with her. A girlfriend is not yet on that level of commitment.
