What's really happening when you "crack" your knuckles is that you are either pushing the joint back into or out of its normal position. Joints are the meeting points of two separate bones which are held together by connecting tissues and ligaments. A thick, clear lubricant (made mostly of carbon dioxide and some nitrogen) called synovial fluid is found between the bones. When you stretch or pull your finger to get that desired popping noise, you are causing the bones to pull apart. Pressure is reduced on the synovial fluid and bubbles form that quickly expand and then burst - which is why you get that noise.

Does Knuckle Cracking Lead to Arthritis?
Not everybody's joints crack. Some people have a larger separation between the bones and some people can't relax enough to allow the bones to separate. If you can crack and your mom tells you, you're going to get arthritis, she's just yanking your chain. There is no scientific evidence that cracking your knuckles leads to arthritis. However, it can't be good to repeatedly push a joint beyond its normal physical range. Besides that, it's annoying. Cracking your knuckles can cause a decrease in your grip but unless you're signing any multi-million dollar contracts as a pitcher, it's not worth giving up. But it's still annoying

The truth is that eventually ur knuckles will have enlarged and ur cartilage between the knuckles will have grinded down from the constant cracking of the knuckles and the outcome will be arthritis sooner or later as u grow older I suggest u stop this behavior asap or pay the consequences later on.

there was a report on Yahoo several months ago saying it does nothing at all...the cracking sound is actually from a gas pocket/bubble "exploding" under pressure. You may notice that if you do not crack them for some time that they will ache, but that would be releaved when you do crack them...I've cracked my knuckles for as long as I can remember and the only problem I have is when its cold my fingers tend to ache a bit more then usual

well it hasn't been proven that it causes arthritis.. and i crack my knuckles all the time! what happens is the fluid in your joint pops out which makes the cracking noise.. this fluid is then replaced by the joint so really you aren't losing out on anything! i think its just a load of crap to because people dont like other people cracking them! x

no, cracking your knuckles is merely just releasing the fluid for a brief second around your joints, it comes back within millaseconds. in other words, it does nothing to your joints.

My husband is always yelling at my daughter for cracking her knuckles so I called the doctor. It does nothing at all. Everything you hear is a myth.

Some use to say it causes arthritis, but through much research and asking many doctors it does nothing. It can only irritate people around you.

Yes it leads to "trigger" finger.
The better way instead of cracking your knuckles is to slowly stretch and massage.
