it seems that snakes have gotten a bad rap for awhile, and are stereotyped as evil, or dangerous. from what i understand most are not poisonous, and do not even bite. the character in the bible chose the form of a snake for some reason, but what if the form of, oh i don't know a panda or something was taken instead? well i guess then pandas would be feared as well. the "evilness" of the snake has been wired into humanity's subconscious for some time.

Snakes have gotten a bad rap. The reason that Satan is depicted as a serpent comes from the fact that in ancient polytheistic religions that were often Matriarchal and Goddess based the snake is considered to be a symbol of feminine power. Since it is obvious that all of the Judeo-Christian-Muslim religions are patriarchal and have a history of degradation of women it follows that snakes would be considered a symbol evil by those religions.

"Dragon" is just an archaic word for "dinosaur". The word "dinosaur" wasn't even made up until 1845, so before that, they were called "dragons". The Bible mentions dragons 35 times. They have always lived contemporaneously with Man, and Man killed off most of them in the millennia that followed the Flood. This is why every culture of antiquity on the face of the Earth has dragon legends. Dragons are prominent in various forms of art in many cultures throughout the last few thousand years. They're not just some creature that people "made up". Even Marco Polo, who was a meticulous recorder of facts, wrote on his trip to China that the Emperor "was raising dragons to pull chariots in his parades". Now why would an intelligent man say such a thing? I think it's because the emperor was raising dragons to pull chariots in his parades. Simple as that.

I wouldn't call a snake evil....so much as I'd say it is somewhat alien to *our* nature. We are mammals, they're reptiles. We are born helpless and need our parents to survive....snakes are hatched more or less self-sufficient and have neither the need nor the instinct to bond with *anyone* really....

We have limbs, and they don't...their senses are radically different from ours (they not only taste but smell and to some degree *hear* the world around them courtesy of their tongues). And of course they are predators who have to hunt to live, where we are more like (takes deep breath) omnivore-capable scavengers who descended from herbivores (plant eaters).

Point is, our basic animal natures, the foundations of our instincts, can't be much more different, not unless you start talking about invertebrates like spiders (spineless critters in other words).

And lots of us humans have *issues* when it comes to things that are *very* different from ourselves. Hell, some of us still freak out over trivial differences like skin color or languages. And being a snake is four or five whole orders of magnitude *more* different from us than that.

Which is a shame, because if I recall correctly, snakes are usually more scared of us than we are of them. Think. We are usually way bigger than they are and have *limbs*. Barring the occasional python or anaconda, most snake species don't look at us and see "food"....they see a big honking threat and want--for want of a better word--to *get away* ASAP.

Just my two cents....thanks for your time, have a good one! :)

Snakes are not evil, in fact our life on this planet would be much more unpleasant without them.
Snakes keep the rodent population under control.

Snakes are not evil. Maybe they symbolize evil in the bible. I am not evil and according to chinese astrology I am a snake. In regular astrology I am a lion.

No creatures (except for some humans) are "evil".

Being a dangerous creature as a result of natural tendencies isn't evil. Evil requires a level of thinking that only humans possess.

'Evil snakes' implies a morality that snakes don't possess.

Personally I don't think you can describe a being as evil, but the actions they act out instead.

Plus, snakes are damn scary!! guess that's why the bible guy wrote them as evil.

NO, in short

the metaphor in the bible was a play on perceptions of that time, and the authors intended to play on those fears.
