free.grisoft.com and get AVG AntiSpyware.
Also go to download.com and get:
Spybot Search and Destroy
AdAware SE
Get these exactly, there are many with close names that are trying to fake you in to trying theirs instead of the best.
There is no single solution to spyware, these three work very very well as a team.
Get AVG Antivirus while oin the grisoft.com page, it is free and very very good.

Use the Avast program, go to their website @ Avast.com and select their free version. Once downloaded it will take a while to scan your files for viruses, spyware, etc. My scan took 35 minutes but it completely removed the Spyware that was driving me crazy!

An anti-virus program is a must. If your PC came with Norton or McAfee anti-virus and you have NOT been updating the virus definition files your PC is at risk. If your subscription to Norton or McAfee has lapsed and you have not renewed your subscription so that you can receive virus definition updates then your PC is at risk.
An anti-virus program is only effective if the virus
definition files are updated on a regular basis (at
least once a week). If you are cheap (like me) there is a good anti-virus program called AVG from Grisoft that is free for personal use.
You can download it here:
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
Before you install this program be sure to UNINSTALL
any other anti-virus program that you currently have
installed. Anti-virus programs don't play well
together so you should have only one anti-virus
program installed at any given time.
In addition to protecting your PC from viruses you must also protect your computer from spyware.
There are 4 good FREE programs that are effective at dealing with spyware: Ad-aware SE Personal (removes spyware), Spybot Search & Destroy (blocks and removes spyware), Spyware Blaster 3.51 (blocks spyware), and AVG Anti-Spyware (formally Ewido Anti-Malware). I have all 4 of these programs installed on my PC and they work well together without any conflicts. After these programs are installed they need to be updated on a regular basis to be effective. These programs will have to be manually updated.
You can download Ad-aware SE Personal here (click on "Download Now" near top left of page):
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5
Ad-aware SE Personal will scan your PC and
identify spyware that should be removed. Ad-aware
definition files are updated about once a week.
Spybot Search and Destroy can be downloaded here:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
Spybot Search and Destroy will "Check for Problems"
(scan) your PC for spyware that should be removed.
Be sure to use the "Immunize" feature that blocks
known spyware from getting onto your PC. Spybot
Search and Destroy detection files are updated about
once a month.
After you update Spybot Search and Destroy each month be sure to "immunize" your PC so that the updated spyware threats will be blocked.
Spyware Blaster can be downloaded here:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
After the program is installed be sure to click on
"Enable All Protection" so the program blocks spyware.
Detection files are updated about once a month. After updates are installed each month be sure to click on "Enable All Protection" again so the updated detection files are applied.
You can download AVG Anti-Spyware here:
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/20/lng/us/tpl/v5
Automatic protection is free for the first month, but after that, the free version requires you to manually update and scan your PC yourself.
You may also want to use Mozilla Firefox as your
primary web browser. Firefox is an excellent program,
and I have been using it for several months now.
Firefox has fewer security flaws than Internet
Explorer. You will still need to use Internet
Explorer to download Microsoft updates.
You can download Firefox free here:
http://www.mozilla.com/
Be sure you have all the critical updates from
Microsoft for Windows and Internet Explorer.
Open Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" and select
"Windows Update", and download all the critical updates.
You also need a good firewall to protect your PC.
Windows XP comes with a firewall. It's better than
nothing but you need more protection. Zone Alarm Basic Firewall is a FREE firewall program that provides good protection.
You can download it here:
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp
When you install Zone Alarm you will be prompted to
choose the free trial to Zone Alarm Pro or just Zone
Alarm, choose the Zone Alarm (just the firewall)
because it's free. Zone Alarm monitors incoming and
outgoing transmissions. It will take a little effort
to get the settings up and running but it's easy and
worth the time.

I had good luck with XoftspySE cleaning up my computer. I had an AntiVermins infection, and this program was the only one I tried that killed it for good. The free scanners didn't seem to work for me.
Follow the instructions on this website to install XoftspySE and clean up your computer.

Good luck!
