I've been searching online for data. I can find no information suggesting that coughing, despite the pressure it puts on the abdomen, is likely to be harmful. Most of the discussions center on medicines (presciption and over the counter) used to treat coughing. It's probably worth a call to your doctor's office just to be sure. Good luck with the baby!

Coughing can not hurt the baby, but it can hurt you. My friend coughed so hard that she broke a rib while pregnant. That is not fun at all. Take something for the cough, but talk to your Dr. first to make sure it is safe to take. When I was sick during the holidays my Dr. told me to take Robitussin DM. It is on my list of appropriate medicines. You should really only take something if you are past your first triemester.
