Burning movies?

I want to burn a movie that is on my computer onto a DVD cd that I can play on a dvd player at home. What type of file do they have to be for me to burn them onto a dvd cd?

Have a look at http://www.winavi.com this converts most if not all files to DVD & then burn it using Nero 7 or something similar
