with importing and playing cd's in itunes. It imports what seems to be in record time, however when I go to play the tunes that apparently been imported it flicks through each and will not play any. I can make a cd via itunes so i'm confused. Why won't it allow me to add new music? Why won't it play the new music?

Most likely it's nothing to do with the CD drive. It may be because you don't have:

The latest version of Quick time player (needed for Itunes)
The latest version of Flash

See if you have these installed (downloaded) and if not do download them.
If you do email me (contact me) and I will try to look into it further, (I am a technician at a college).

I also recomend that you try to play the cd's through another device/player first i.e. Media player.

Also simply check the setting of the Itunes.

check your import setting, itunes imports at 4 or five times real time so obviously something is up.

make sure itunes importing is set to mp3 encoder.
It honestly sounds like a scratched disc but I am sure you'd've checked this.

can you play the cds through itunes using the external drive?
try this first, you may have to reinstall, or do an update

itunes plays AAC and m4p files only, so if the cds have mp3's on them or wma, then it wont play them. You must get itunes to convert them first. Move the tracks onto your computer, then import them from the hard disc.
