Any regular octa- gon (an octagon whose sides and vertex angles are congru- ent) has 8 lines of symmetry: 4 through opposite vertices and 4 through midpoints of parallel sides. Many other octagons with fewer lines of symmetry may be drawn. Your answer is 8 and only 8.

I assume you mean a regular octagon, in which case there are 8.
If you set the octagon upright like a stopsign, you get (1) an up-down line connecting the midpoints of the top and bottom sides, (2) a left-right line connecting the midpoints of the left and right sides,
(3) a "NW-SE" line connecting midpoints of those sides, (4) a "NE-SW" line in the same way. But you also get four more lines by connecting the four pairs of opposite vertices in the octagon.

If an octagon is stretched exactly vertically or exactly horizontally, the only two possible lines of symmetry are vertical and horizontal.
