It's all about the money. The only reason marijuana is illegal is because it directly threatens the petroleum, fabric, and forestry industries and the government can't make money on it as our current laws stand.
Don't take my word for it. Do a quick Google search on "marijuana conspiracy" and find out for yourself. You'll be SHOCKED at how misinformed your teachers, parents, friends, and clergy are, and just how blatantly the government has lied all these years.

if you think marijuana is not harmful, you are uninformed and incorrect.
long-term smoking can cause emphysema, lung cancer, impairment to brain and nervous system, etc. TRUE, it's not NEARLY as harmful as alcohol, but it's NOT perfectly safe.
and second, many, MANY groups are fighting to legalize marijuana, probably the biggest being NORML, the National Organization for Reform of Marijuana Laws. some cities have taken steps towards decriminalizing it, or at least moving down the priority list.
third, part of the reason that it remains illegal is the fact that that very illegality is what prevents many people from using it. regardless of whether or not YOU are afraid of breaking the law, MANY people are, and so they don't smoke. if you legalize it, the amount of people getting high, and the access that young children have to it will BOTH skyrocket.
i do, however, agree that it should be exactly on par with alcohol. taxed, regulated, age-limited, illegal to drive under influence, etc. instead of spending millions to fight it, the government could be profiting by creating it.

Because the pickle-brain alcoholics running your country are get tax revenue from the booze.Anyone can grow a plant, its all natural, not man made.In which most man made crap is toxic to the human body. They don't care about all the innocent deaths booze causes,or the death blow that it gives to a family.Bottom line Alcohol atrophies the brain tissue, hangovers are your brain screaming in pain,in fact dying tissue. After a life time of drinking your brain will look like a raisin,Fact. Now that sounds like really sound minds running the country.

Marijuana is illegal because of the percieved connection between it and rebellious behavior. I think we should treat marijuana like alcohol or tobacco and make it legal and highely regulated and then tax the crap out of it.

My guess is it's because the government can make money on selling alcohol and then more money for DUIs and other alcohol related of fences If they legalized marijuana then they could only make money on selling it and that wouldn't be as much as they get now for possesion and selling fines.

Marijuana not harmful? PLEASE!!! Are you actually that stupid that you believe it when someone wearing a white coat says there is no danger in smoking marijuana? Marijuana smoke, just like cigarette smoke and the smoke from a burning building, contains carbon monoxide, which is not only harmful it's also carcinogenic (READ: It causes cancer). Also, you only smoke the female marijuana plant, which is LOADED with female hormones -- ever wonder why guys who smoke a lot of dope get "man boobs"? Finally, the active ingredient in marijuana is so chemically complex that it'll probably take another 20 years before scientists know all the possible effects of smoking dope. BOTTOM LINE: Alcohol and marijuana are both harmful, but it is possible to drink alcohol in small quantities and not get drunk -- heck, drinking a glass or two of red wine every day has health benefits. Can you smoke a joint and NOT get stoned? Don't think so. Do us a favor and stop whining like a liberal.

During Prohibition, Grass was apparently commonly used. So much so that when the Volstead Act was repealed, the Brewerys wanted grass made illegal so as not to cut into their profits. Heck you can grow it in a tomato patch!
So they started a bogus campaign advertising it as:
'The Devil Weed', which is actually: Jimsson Weed.
Needs to be made legal, as alternative to booze.
Supposed to be a FREE Country...

Perhaps there are some large and powerful lobbyist groups who would like to keep an easily accessible item off the market that might compete with them. The government WOULD benefit...the amount spent on prosecution and imprisonment for personal users would go down greatly and they would have another "sin" to tax.
