It is the main topic of your paragraph. You generally state your thesis first and expand on it. Such as give why. You also restate the thesis at the end of the paragraph.

Hope this helps!!

A thesis statement is the main point of your essay, or your main arguement. For example if you were writing a persuasive essay your thesis could be "Teenagers should not smoke because it will negatively effect thier health"

You would then go on to support your arguement with several paragraphs of examples that prove your point. If we continued with the smoking example you could do a paragraph on cancer, a pararaph on Heart Disease a paragraph on Emphazema (sp?) and so on.

Then to finish your essay you would nee a conclusion which basically sums up your thesis again and all your supporting facts. (As we can see the numerous health problems associated with smoking are reason enough for teens not to start this awful habit)

Thats just one example but you can appl;y this formula to most any essay you want to do....start with a thesis then make an outline and you'll be welll on your way. Good luck
