Since a opossum is a wild animal, they should be left in the wild. Roaming possums should not be fed. If they become dependant on the food a human provides, it would be hard for them if the free handouts would ever stop. Also, most of the human handouts would not be as healthy as their natural foods. People food is for people. Dog food is for dogs. Cat food is for cats. Their is no commercial possum food.

Possums have 50 teeth and usually wild animals, even if raised by humans, will not remain nice pets. You always hear about a few exceptions. Besides, possums have really smelly big stools. I'm a wildlife rehabber and have raise young ones and have cared for a few adults. They are cool, beneficial animals and should be admired from a distance. They love to eat nasty things most people don't like: cockroaches, slugs, snails, snakes.

I knew a lady who had an opossum she'd raised from a baby. The mother was road kill and the baby would have died if it had been left with the mom, so this lady took it home and raised it.

She told me that opossums are not good pets for a variety of reasons:

1) They are nocturnal so they tend to not be very interactive with their owners during the daytime.

2) They like to be arboreal, so they need a place where they can climb.

3) She said that even though she loved her opossum, they were, in her words, "as dumb as a box of rocks." They just aren't very much fun to have around.

4) They tend not to be very affectionate.

For all of those reasons, plus the cost of caring for them, I don't think they'd make very good pets. Much better they should stay free.

That's nice that you are concerned for Possums. I rescued a young possum after she was hit by a car and she lived with me for 3 years. Her name was Pie.

welp they are a wild animal; they should be free; but if they choose to live outside someone's house and that person wants to give them some food or try to pet them, i don't think that's bad. if they try to take them inside, i would disagree with that, unless they are hurt or something.

I think they should be left in the wild where they are best suited.
