Chinchillas can bite. They will usually only do so if they feel very threatened, or if you have food residue on your hands when you go te touch them. They do not have claws, so are only able to defend themselves 2 ways.
1. With their teeth.
2. With their urine
When chinchillas are stressed, or feel threatened, they will stand and urinate at their perceived attacker. I had a chin and a small dog. My dog was peed on a few times before he learned to leave the cage alone!
They do have special dietary requirements and will not do well on generic rodent food. They must be fed Chinchilla pellets and have timothy hay available at all times to supply sufficient roughage. Treats can include fruits, vegetables, and some nuts, but must be given in moderation.
Like most rodents, Chinchilla teeth do grow and must be kept down by giving your chin wood or stone treats to grind their teeth on.

The most important thing to remember is that Chinchillas are only recommended for older children and adults! They are fragile, and timid with new owners. If you are looking for something that will love you right away, get a dog. Chins must be made to feel safe and secure before they will interact with you at all. But, if you work daily with your chin, you can gain its trust and will have a wonderful pet!

Chinchillas require a lot of roughage, and the diet should mainly be made up of a good quality grass hay along with pellets made for chinchillas. Treats should be given in moderation (one teaspoon per day in total) and can include fruits (eg fresh or dried apples, grapes, raisins), vegetables (carrots, celery), sunflower seeds, and rolled oats. The digestive system of chinchillas is fairly sensitive so any diet changes should be gradual.

Yes Chinchillas bite, under certain circumstances. If you hurt them, it is in self defense. If you are pestering them or doing something they do not like, they will usually give you a warning "bark" before they bite. If you have the sent of fresh fruit or some foods on your hands or lips -- they will think your fingers are "treats" and are not hurting you intentionally. Then, there are some chinchillas that were never meant to be pets.

oh yes they bite, and its a very nasty bite to,they eat fruit and u can buy pellets for them from ur pet shop. females have a tendancy to stand up and spray you with urine when they get frightend and it stinks to. if you have a pair of breeding chinchillas
the female can become very nasty and terratorial and can some times attack the male and anyone who comes near them, but that is only somtimes, they are quite hard animals to look after i would advise u to get some books on them and read up as much as u can, they r lovely little things and they can also make little noises at u like they are trying to communicate, well thats what they r trying to do,anyway have lots of fun and good luck,ur going to need it especially if they get out they r so hard to catch, but it will keep u fit if nothing else. x

Had one when I was little (many many years ago), and as i remember it we fed ours hamster food. He didn't bite but didn't really like being held either.

they can bite, but it depends how used to people they are. i cant remember what we gave ours as it was a few years ago. i think it was normal rodent food, the same we gave out mice and rats.

chinchillas run very fast and are great fun to chase around your house.
