if you own: think about replacing the windows with insulated double paned windows, make sure there are no drafts in the attic or wherever and patch them and insulate un-insulated areas. solar panels are good too if you just care about efficency, because they are expensive.
if you rent: replace incandesent light bulbs with flouresant bulbs, complain to the landlord about drafts or uninsulated things, maybe they might fix it, but probably not

Insulation and new less-drafty double-pane windows are the best way. Also a new energy-efficient furnace.
You can have more insulation blown into your attic since heat rises....I have about 27" of insulation in mine and I only use about 300 gallons of oil a year, not bad for living in the usually cold Northeast....
If you have the dough you can look into a hot water solar system (which I also have) or a more expensive PV (photovoltaic) solar system to produce electricity...

Insulate your roof. Insulate your walls. Install double glazing. Install a condensing boiler (Gas C.H.). Use energy efficient appliances (particularly the fridge / freezer). Use low energy lighting. Switch appliances off instead of standby when not in use. Unplug chargers when not in use.

Better insulation, double paned windows, use flourecent lights instead of regular ones, set your AC higher in the summer and lower in the winter. Those are the first few things...There are lots more though. Go to the site below.

sit in the dark ware all your clothes for bed rub to sticks in the garden to make a fire then cook on it. climb over a neighbours fence but learn how to lip read or the tv wont make any sense.
you could wash your clothes in a river and bash them on the rocks until theyare dry. and shower under a waterfall.

replace your water heater with a "flash" on-demand water heater, this saves the gas or electricity used to keep water hot 24/7 when you only need hot water periodically. these things have been used in Europe for years and are very safe and sensible.
