The desigh of the plants are such as to prevent explosion. The Nuclear plant reactor works by nuclear uranium interaction called fission. Energy is produced out of the fission process releasing heat energy. They are strict safety precaution that are constructed into the Plant. The material in the reactor core is not sufficiently enriched to cause a atomic bomb type explosion.
So Nuclear plant are basically safe. No need to fear them. They are one of our best sources of electrical power producing systems.
The reator core whose reativity period is made to exceed a limit will cause a reactor to run away . At that point there is a risk of melt down:however the reactor will not explode.

Chernobyl was the only one to acutally explode, and that was the result of human error. There have been a number of minor incidents inculding Three-Mile Island (which did not meltdown) where some radioactive material was released.

All in all nuclear power is quite safe but the plants are very expensive to build.

Technically, Chernobyl exploded, but it wasn't because it was a nuclear power plant. The nuclear fuel contained in a nuclear reactor cannot under-go a nuclear explosion. It's simply impossible.

The question is kind of vague so I limited my answer to actual explosion related to the reactor itself. There have been many other "explosions" at nuclear power plants but that were not actually the reactor itself. There have been 3 explosion where the reactor itself was involved. 1 was in the United States at the Idaho Falls reactor (1961) and 2 have been in Russia (Chernobyl 1986 and Leningrad 1974)

None. They don't explode anyway.

Chernobyl had a fire.

Three Mile Island was a meltdown.
