Why not get a pay as you go phone. Boost, Tracfone etc.

Verizon does have a pay-as-you-go service... but it's not cheap, $.99/per day plus calls, etc. I have a verizon phone, but did not have to make a deposit. My kids have tracfones... check their website, they have frequent specials. I bought one for my nephew from their site... $19.99 with 2 60-minute cards and free shipping. Another good thing about tracfones is if it gets lost, you're only out your $20.... learned that the hard way! Definitely recommend them for kids.

If you have a cell phone already, then you can just buy your minutes as you need..of course they're prepaid minutes. I believe you can do that from many places......my wife got hers through Radio Shack. Best of luck to you.
