This is one of my favorites Siren.
I've always respected Miya Angelou.
I Rise
You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.
Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.
Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise.
Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops.
Weakened by my soulful cries.
Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don't you take it awful hard
'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines
Diggin' in my own back yard.
You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I'll rise.
Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I've got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?
Out of the huts of history's shame
I rise
Up from a past that's rooted in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.
Our perception compounds the pain. It's a multiplier, (we see that in our dear good friend Dazed?)
If left unchecked, the emotional part of pain can become a cancer and eat us.
Faith and love are the mortal enemy of pain (and suffering).
That's enough philosophy for today.
People all ready think I'm kind of weird around here :)
LOL.

The spiritual understanding or interpretation comes after the ailment is developed. That doesn't make it any less important, it's just the order of things ;) Stress can cause illness. Those who feel they have spiritual peace aren't usually very stressed. So that would be a direct connection between spiritual health and physical health. Perhaps not the one you're after, but still... You're asking why things happen, or perhaps why they happen in that order. And the answer to that is all around you. Whatever is, is the cause of everything else that is. That's how complicated our Universe is. Andrew H's answer is also correct, but you may want more information, like what regulates parasites, bacteria and viruses, then what regulates the regulators, and so on. Nightowl's answer is also correct, but you may like to ask what regulates DNA...etc. If you do, you'll just go round in circles, because everything is connected, it's all a part of the same system. Take anything out and the system will change or perhaps even fall apart. This can be seen from the already discovered connections between seemingly disconnected objects and situations. So when you imagine how many connections we are yet to find, you may start to understand what I' getting at with everything being the cause of everything else, at least indirectly. The mind does heal the body, it's what regulates the healing and immune systems. Conscious control over that regulation should also be possible and is if you believe reports. The placebo effect is also an indication of some form of conscious control, because trust is a conscious decision. And the placebo effect doesn't work if the patient doesn't trust the medical professional.

Physical pain is due to the reaction of nerves, making it from the thing itself. Emotional pain is due to perception. Give me physical pain any day.

Both. While some people have higher thresholds of pain due to their nature, the response is from an outside stimuli perceived by the brain may not be one of pain. For example, pain for one person may be perceives as pleasure to another: The masochist, tattooing and body piercing. The brain of every individual is like a finger no two are alike. Also some people from the nurture part of the equation become desensitized to certain stimuli, pain being one of them. The person abused as a child often is desensitized to physical pain.

I think it is your perception of it. Hypnosis can take away the idea of pain enough so that some people can have dental treatments or major surgery without drugs. I think that if pain was anything else you wouldnt be able to sleep with something like a sprained ankle without major drugs. But this is just my opinion.

I guess pain would be the result of the "thing" causing the pain...but the degree of pain you feel would be determined by your perception of it.

my non medical opinion is that that nerve endings register pain for a good reason.
emotional pain is another issue. a person who is stong in their positive beliefs about the world will suffer less emotional pain in the long run. a can do spirit can get you through many a situation.
a word of warning, be sure your positive beliefs have a solid foundation.
