There could be any numbers of reasons that your computer keeps freezing. It could be the operating system itself, a hardware fault, or an application on the computer.
If you still have the installation media for the OS and any programs that you need on there, something you may want to consider doing is to copy anything you need from the computer to another device, then wipe the hard disk clean and reinstall the OS and any applications. That will give you a clean copy of Windows, without the extra stuff that accumulates on a disk after a while. It may make your machine run smoother, and if it was a file that got corrupted that was causing the crash, resolve your issue.
Another thing you may want to consider is that you can get a basic computer for not too much more than what it cost you to have the repair shop look at your old computer. I was just looking at the HP web site, and it had a computer listed for under $300. It wouldn't be a cutting edge computer, but it would at least have the latest version of Windows, and have the resources (processing, memory, hard disk) to run the latest version of Windows. It would be fine for going on ebay and other internet sites.

Driver conflicts also contribute a lot to freeze-ups. You may have a program that was designed for ME, XP, or NT, or perhaps something you liked and held over from 95 or even 3.1! Those may work, but the drivers may clash with another, causing a conflict and system freeze. At least with 98 you'll get a blue screen or a message telling you it's locked up. With XP, it simply restarts the computer, and you lose anything you're working on at the moment!
Back when I had 3.1 and then 95, I took mine to a shop a couple times. After spending more than the thing was worth, I got wise, and now do my own repairs! I'll get a new one before going to a shop again. Got a virus? All they do is install Norton's Anti-virus, run it, remove it, and charge you a hundred bucks for doing what you could have done yourself! Plus, you don't even get to keep the anti-virus program they used (unless they forget to take the CD out!).

laptop guy, above is real. it really is a warmth appropriate project. i comprehend precisely what you're going via, I had an identical ingredient take position to me about a week in the past. both purchase a small fan, cool off that processor, or like I did, basically set a small section fan to the area of your laptop, and attitude the fanblades into the venting slats, yet i doesn't positioned direct fan wind onto it, because there is alot airborne dirt and dust too, to think about. My fan blow only somewhat to the area of those slats, yet adequate cooler air enters, keeps me processing! good success (by way of how, this saved me precisely $926.40 2, the fee i might want to have paid very last Sunday at BestBuy. instead, a 12.00 fan

Unfortunately the answer is that windoze 98 is very flawed and prone to system errors that are not handled properly. This causes your freeze ups.
You may be able to find some updates on the microsoft website that help you out. I would suggest that you upgrade to XP at least if you can.

I've had problems like that when I have lots of Spyware and adware on my computer. Try running Adaware on your computer. I would way that would be the most basic fix. But it could be an number of things.

You might need to delete your history. When you surf alot, it builds up on your memory. You might try doing a disk clean up and defrag.if you still have problems you might have a virus. You would need to get a virus protection and run a scan.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
