Parenting styles that we are raised with most certainly have an affect on all area of our live including out confidence level. Bit there are many examples of people who were raised by parents who lacked in the parental skills department that have believed in themselves and gone on to have more confidence then others who were raised by loving and positive parents. Self confidence is such an individual thing and takes into account many variables.

I was an overweight teen and my mother would occassionally make comments to me that really hurt my feelings. My confidence level was shot, and I would walk around with my head down and let people walk all over me.

I ignored the problem and continued to gain weight. I became obese, and I was in denial about the problem. I had no idea I was "fat", despite the comments people would make. My doctor finally told me that I was at high risk to develop serious health problems if I didnt lose weight. I hadn't had a boyfriend in months. People would whisper as I walked by.

I have lost all of my weight. For the first time ever, I'm a size six and have absolutely no problems with my confidence.

I once hated my mom for all of the harsh things she said to me, and then realized that it was for my own good and she did it because she loves me.

What is it that your parents rag on you for?

Change it, they are probably just saying it for your own good.

Or, if they are after you about ridiculous stuff, just remember, that you will not live with them forever. You will eventually grow into an adult, and your parents will have little or no effect on your everyday life. Keep your head up and stay strong!

Friends are not unlisted. Majority of my friends are of POP culture and they always love to keep saying why ya listen to these songs that noone listens to![I love Metal]

I dont necessarily think that my lack of confidence all my parents' fault, but, as a major in child development, I know that it can definlately have an influence!

Absolutely. But the good news is, when you reach a certain age in your life, there are no more excuses. You determine how you feel about yourself when you're ready to make a stand and say that everyone else was wrong about how they treated you.

It only depends on you on who you want to be... or if you want to be who they say you are. you have the power to change everything in your life. And i think as we grow we get more sure of our self's. Sometimes people treat other people the way they feel about them self's. So be who you want to be.. not what everyone wants you to be.

parents have the largest influence in a child's development, period.

but if you blame your self-esteem on your parents, you're not getting any closer to solving the problem. i decided to wallow in self-pity for a good portion of my teenage years and it never did me a lick of good. all it did was waste a big chunk of time.

Absolutely.

If your parents/teachers/friends teach you that they do not value you or your contributions, then you will not value yourself and you will tend to align yourself with people who treat you like crap because you feel that you do not deserve any better.
