how do you know if a poem is well written

Read it out loud; see if it flows. Does it have a purpose, does it make you feel?

An old english teacher told me once that a good poem is anything that tugs on your heart strings a little. I agree with that statement. That's why poetry is translated from all kinds of different languages the flow will be different because sometimes there is not a pure translation for a certain line but it still touches people nonetheless.

There is no right or wrong way to write a poem. If it is real, it says something, it ignores form for content, then it is usually a good poem. Rememeber there is no such thing as "should". Follow the old rules and you are a prisoner of form.
