I had my brother in law hook me up 2 his network and I keep having problems with 1 of my computers..It goes on the internet but it keeps saying that its not connected to the network. So Im not being able to connect to the server to update anything or use my sophos anti-virus to update anything. My computer end up getting a virus or spyware or something....But my laptop is working just fine and it updates and shows its on so I know that its working properly... So I want to get off of his network and go on another... I haveSBC-Yahoo.. DSL and I didn't upload the disk that they gave me with the dsl..

First of all, setting up a peer to peer network will not protect both systems. Each computer will need it's own anti-virus, ant-spyware protection no matter what. There are freebies out there called Adaware SE and SpyBot S&D and they are really good.

Since you are using SBC DSL you also get Computer Associates anit-everything for free. Load it onto both systems.

The only way to protect both of your systems with one network connection to the net would be through a sever-client network setup. This would be a bit more difficult to set up than the built in peer to peer that comes with XP.

Protection from spyware and viruses is obtained commercially...you need Norton or Mcaffee, both great antivirus/anti-spyware programs. As for pop-up blocker, that is integrated into IE as of Windows XP, so you should be fine with it.
