Oh, Sweet Alex. I refuse to throw dung, and I have no tolerance for immature behavior. I can't prove it, but would wager you have far, far more deleted postings than I.
Wonder why that would be?

We do not enjoy complete freedom of speech, either in general or in Yahoo. Some things that you might want to say would be against the law.
Say you work for the CIA and you want to write a book about all the supercool classified things you did. Nope.
Hypothetically, suppose you wanted to advocate that something violent and bad happened to a high ranking public official. Law enforcement would be paying you a visit.
Suppose you (yawn, everyone's going to do this one) yelled "Fire" in a crowded theater, causing a riot. You'd get busted.
You have freedom of speech, but must use it responsibly and within certain broad guidelines.
Yahoo has no obligation to give you ANY freedom of speech. They're not a government (yet). They can and do censor you, especially if you say **** or **** or *********** or "sweet child of ****!"

I think you are supposed to have freedom of speech. Atleast as much freedom of speech as you would normally have in the everyday world. In normal every day life, you wouldn't walk up to a group of Native Americans talking to each other and say, "Boy, would I like to see all the lazy injuns put back on the reservations." You may think it and that's okay, everyone's entitled to their opinion, but you probably aren't going to say it outloud in that situation. It would be rude, mean and nasty, whether you believe it or not.
I think Yahoo is a place where you are SUPPOSED to be able to express your beliefs and ask the tough questions, but I think they just want you to be nice about it. Therefore the rules about not insulting people, etc. I, do think, that some people will report abuse for your question/answer not because it necessarily violates the rules but because they don't like it or support it. That is where the violation of freedom of speech comes in. I also do not think that Yahoo really looks at the reports of abuse, they just remove the question or answer no matter what.

We have limited freedom of speech and I happen to believe that is a good thing. This is a questions and answers format,no chit chat.
There is a problem now with people getting violations for wrong reasons and many see abolishing the abuse system and absolute free speech as the solution. There I don't agree.
People who are in favor of this lack foresight in my opinion. The board would be flooded with nonsense, child predators, yihadi's,spam and maybe even worse.
The abuse system need to be fixed but total free speech here is not the solution.
On the pro side it would indeed end good people getting violations because they get stalked just cos some don't like them but the downside would be a total destruction of what this format is about.Plowing your way to hundreds of hey how's everyone doing? to find one decent political question and then i don't even mention the extremists from all sides who would leave no place for any good and intelligent debate.

"Freedom of Speech" is on a decline in United States culture, but not in a way that most people notice it. Censorship is gaining a quiet momentum in the forms of "popular cultural ideals", such as laws governing "hate crimes". I don't condone "hate crimes", but to establish a more severe punishment for a crime because it was motivated by bigotry is a denial of the principles of "freedom of speech".
In general, I think we enjoy a great deal of "Freedom of Speech", though many people apply it poorly to specific instances where it doesn't belong, such as Yahoo! Answers. Yahoo! Answers is a privately-owned forum, and therefore it is the property and province of Yahoo! Inc to maintain or refuse whatever business they deem as acceptable or unacceptable.

No i don't believe we do. People are censored all the time for hate speech or things too explicit. I'm not promoting any of that, but our first amendment would allow that. However, since we're operating under a private organization that has nothing to do with the government, they can censor whatever they want.

Well, I'm not so sure. I think Yahoo! is a bit selective in some of the things it lets us say. They pulled two of my responses because someone didn't like them.
How un-American! But very Bush-like...is Bush looking to be CEO of Yahoo! when he leaves the White House?

It seems as if you are a liberal, you are against freedom of speech. Just look at what happens at college campuses when a group that liberals do not like speak. They are not allowed to talk. This never happens the other way around. Similar on Yahoo.

For the most part, yes. Your main limitations are the same limitations that are put on the nightly news. You cannot say anything excessively vulgar, insensitive, or offensive. This is a place for discussion, not name calling and personal attacks. The exchange of ideas is fairly free and unregulated here.

Yes we enjoy freedom of speech, if you go to the Yahoo! products selection, people are bashing yahoo.com and its affiliates. Its just that Yahoo doesn't tolerate meaningless comments and I don't either. If I wanted to see something ignorant I will tune into Flavor Flav!
besides if you are reported for a comment and it was not offensive, they you write to Yahoo! thats why I did and i got my 10points back!

Yes we do. Now and then you get someone who disagrees with you and reports you for some sort of ridiculous reason but the majority of comments are accepted.
