The answer to this question involves very complicated mechanisms that I will try to simplify for you. Basically in order to grow, what do you need? Easy, more cells. Pretty logical, so you need to increase cell division. Well each cell has a "cellular clock" called the cell cycle, that is part of its DNA, and is regulated by many many many factors, particularly extracellular factors and signal transduction (message systems that relay signals from extracellular factors to the inside of the cell).

So when the body is growing, signals are telling cells, DIVIDE OFTEN, WE NEED TO GROW. Now, the problem is that you need the right balance of cells in the right places. For example, you can't grow too much muscle and skin without the bones to support them, and you can't grow too much fat and muscle without enough skin to cover it. So each cell type needs to have its own special signals. And they do, for example, growth factors, cytokines, and hormones signal to specific cells when to divide. Of course the cells need the proper nutrition to grow, so what you eat is also an important factor.

So in summary . . . signaling molecules called growth factors (or hormones or cytokines) tell a cell, through signal transduction, that it needs to speed up its cell cycle and divide. That is how you grow.
