Is it necessary to copyright a song to protect your work before you submit it to the music business reps. for acceptance? If so, what is the process? Thank you

Your piece already has what's called a poor man's copyright. Just keep a copy at home, dated, and you'll be fine. By the way, if they're a reputable company, they won't steal your music.
They'd be shooting themselves in the foot.

Absolutely!!! You must actually go through the copyright office first using a PA form....mailing a "copy" to yourself does not work.

I found a link with more info for you.
