The Devil's Backbone is a great film. It was directed by Guillermo del Toro, the same guy who did the recently-released Pan's Labyrinth.

The Motrocycle Diaries and Y Tu Mama Tambien are also excellent Spanish-language films.

Propbably one of the best foreign films I've ever seen is City of Lost Children. It was done by the same people who did Amelie and A Very Long Engagement.

My favorite is The Piano Teacher starring Issabelle Huppert and Cinema Paradiso. Oh, I forgot those Pedro Almodovar flicks from Spain.

swing girls.
it's a japanese film about a bunch of schoolgirls and boy who start a swiing band. it's quite cute and entertaining.

linda linda linda.
another japanese film along the same lines of 'swing girls.' this one is about several highschool girls who get together to work on a performance for the upcoming school festival. they decide to learn how to play a song (titled "linda lina") by an older japanese punk band The Blue Hearts.

Water.
it's set in india, but most dialogue is in english. this is a touching tale of a young girl who becomes a widow at the age of 8 (i think) and is sent to a widows house. it's a very touching drama.

the edukators.
a german film about three young 20somethings who burglarize (is that a word?) homes of the wealthy with political intentions. they end up kidnapping one man who was home at the time. and the movie follows the kidnapping and resolution. another great entertaining film.

i guess that'll do for today's recommendations. hope you enjoy!

Shall we Dance - the original one in Japanese. The American one was OK but it missed an enormous amount of the impact of the Japanese version. On top of the whole stale marriage/hot dance instructor story is the stigma ballroom dancing has in Japanese culture. It's almost a perversion over there because even holding hands with your own wife in public is grossly flamboyant by their standards. Holding someone in your arms in public - filthy!

It's a great movie with some nice dancing too.

I don't know if you're looking for a films from a certain country, but I'm a fan of Japanese movies and two titles immediately come to mind: "Kagen no Tsuki" and "Moon Child."

"Kagen no Tskui" (Last Quarter Moon) is more of a suspense/drama movie with a girl named Mizuki getting possessed by a ghost and who is waiting for her long-lost love. Her friends and boyfriend try to figure out how to send the ghost to the afterlife in order to save Mizuki from being trapped in the ghost's 'world' forever.

"Moon Child" is a sci-fi/action movie about a young boy named Sho who finds a vampire in the slums of a futuristic Asian city. He becomes the vampire's (Kei) protege along with a gang of his street friends and the movie follows them as they grow older, fall in love, and are forced to deal with the politics of a changing world. If you like "shoot-em-up" type movies this would be a good one for you since the movie is filled with intense fight scenes and car chases.

Good luck in your search!

I would love to help out. I'm going to give some suggestions, but I do have to say, foreign film is a very big pool to fish from.

La vita é bella - Life is beautiful (Italian)
Le fabuleux Destin d'Amelie Poulain - Amelie Poulain (French)
Temporada de Patos - Duck Season (Mexican)
De zaak alzheimer (Belgian) (They are making a remake in the US)
Les triplettes de belleville (French)
L'hauberge Espagnol (French)
A mi madre le gustan las mujeres (Spanish)
Zus en zo (Dutch)

There are different genres in there.
My personal favourite, I'm not sure, but "Temporada de patos" always makes me laugh out loud.
