It depends what the item is, but most designers have some kind of signature that fakes wouldn't have. If it is clothes or a purse or wallet, compare the stitching to one that you know is authentic by the same designer. Also, you could check the little things that designers always embellish - zippers, inside pockets, etc.

if it's fake these are the signs:
The seams are crooked
The label isn't written in the style
The label is hanging off
It's off the proper website
If it is usually made somewhere like France but on the label it says a country like Thailand or China
Usually there will be somethibg tiny that will make it look different from the orginal like the seam being a different colour.
Hope this helps

We would need more information. Is the name brand product a Rolex; if it is, take it to a watch maker that has experience with servicing Rolex. If it's clothes compare it with the authentic wear from stores. Jewelry you should take it to a jeweler for an appraisal. If you want to save money take it to a pawn shop and see how much it's worth; it's their business to recognize fakes.

You try taking them to the retailer (ie: Louis Vuitton, Chanel - whatever designer you purchased). Keep in mind, though, that they can, and will, confiscate counterfeit goods. Going this route depends on how confident you are in what you purchased. It is common sense, though. If you got a $1000 bag on-line for $50, chances are it is fake.
