Publicity for her, she already made up the money she spent. They should follow Gate's lead, he will spend 100 times more than Oprah, yet he is not jumping up and down, saying look at me and how much I care. That is the best type of charity. All these Hollywood or media whores are in it for them..

Take this example: Comic Relief, you will have a whole bunch of comedians who can easily give 1 million dollars of their own money, some even more. If you multiply the 1 million times at least 30 comedians who can give this money = 30 million, the same amount of money they were able to generate. No need for a program, no need for production, etc..

Another hypocrite is the Barbara Streisand, George Clooney , etc.. They will claim they care, yet they never want to spend any money of their own.

She has always claimed herself a humanitarian, so this action didn't surprise me at all. Actually, I'm surprised she hadn't done it before. What concerns me about O is that to me she almost seems like a racist. She celebrates black people who have made a difference in the world very often which I think is great, but why not do an across the board celebration for anyone who's made a difference, black, white, asian, latin, etc. In this day and age I think that African people living in the states have just as many opportunities as any other race, yet we continue to seperate ourselves to the point where resentments build and they won't go away.

The children of the area in which she built the school can definitely benefit from what she is planning to do, but it seems that she is breeding an army of African women to take on the world or something. Is this just me? There are other areas and nationalities than can benefit from a school geared like hers, I hope if this goes well for her she'll look into doing something for those others too.

I think that is wonderful that she was able to do it...I think it's more wonderful that the girls there have Oprah. She had a hard time getting the school running, If you remember back she had to pay some a**hole gov. $$$ to do it.. and she did it because she wanted those girls to have something in there lives, to help them is to help there country.... also it takes is one person to change a village, she is hoping that this school, will help many villages in Africa from the teachings that they will receive, Remember Helen Keller, it only takes one person to change the world of the deaf, to be able to live in a whole that can hear. She did this selflessly!!!!!!!!!! this was not easy, but she did it, and good for her!!!! I have never met Oprah, But she is the most selfless human being that I have ever saw. She is a woman of god, and she listens to that small voice in her head, saying what would Jesus do!!!!!!!!!

I think that it was a beautiful idea for Oprah to do that fot those young ladies.
I don't think she should have made that nasty comment. That comment wasn't true because I am sure if those girls had a chance to ask for things it would have been more than what she gave. Especially if they had a school already like the rest of American children. I alway thought people wished for items they couldn't afford.

yeah, spending money in the US is a good idea, but that is the fault of each individual state, and our federal govt.'s fault we have needy here....Instead of spending the trillions of dollars our govt. spends on this war and rocket launches, perhaps they should invest in the people here in the states and on the planet Earth......I am sure Ms. Winfrey drops lots of monies into charities. There are multi Billionaires who give to charity.....they can remain unknown, but the media loves a good story, and Oprah is in the public eye, so of course we are going to hear about her new school.....like the other person said, its her money, so she can do what she wants to with it.........those kids will benefit and that is a good thing, I don't see any other celebrities building YMCA centers, like Steven Spielberg, Barbara Streisand, 50 Cent, Snoop Dog,Etc.Etc.... where are the homeless shelters the inner city could use, oh that's right, famous people live in Beverly Hills, not the ghetto........so call it what it is.....go after Oprah, yet no one else is doing anything of merit.......

I think it is wonderful, that she is giving those girls an opportunity to learn and become something. And she was right those girls over there take education more seriously because it isn't as common for everyone top go to school like in the states. So why wouldn't she open it in an area where it will be utilized, instead of used and abused?

Yes, it's nice that she did something for someone else, BUT what I can't comprehend is her inviting Star Jones and Mariah Carey along and holding these lavish parties every day. Surly that money could have gone to the school *or a dozen other desperately needed projects in Africa* Everything she does has to have a "Look at how wonderful I am" quality. Sorry if you disagree, would donating the $$ anonymously have killed her for once??

Yes she could have spent those millions here (but the US is the richest country, the government just needs to learn how to budget and not steal!)
There were over 1500 children who applied and only 152 got in......too me, with the wealth and resources she has, she should have accomadated all the children. It's just a big tax write off anyway.
However it is still an awsome gesture, especially in an area like Africa.

oprah is really a great person, she helped lots of poor people and she made lots of peoples dreams come true
oprah explained the reason of opening this school in this area by saying:: if you asked ppl there what do they want, they would say that they want to learn, unlike if i asked ppl in the united states what do they want, they would say an ipod or snikers.

i really do agree with her, she is so ryt
GOD bless you oprah for changing ppls life to a better life
luv u oprah....xxlooly jamesxx

perhaps Im just cynical or is this just another "look at me...I care" stunt on her behalf. NEVER forget the amount of publicity she gets from such a gesture, its far from selfless. NO doubt we'll have numerous shows and a book or two centred around it and some big dewy eyed pupils/parents telling Oprah how wonderful she is whilst bestowing hugs all around, Oh Oprah you art the new messiah!
