A lot of times they work for the best interest of the corporations that give them money.
This explains why we still can't get cheaper pharmaceuticals, and why corporations are given fines for polluting that are so low that it's easier for them to pay the fines than to stop the pollution.

I'm surprised not many people answer this question. I'm assuming politcians are as corrupt as their former corruptive political buddies.
The interest of this nation lies in the power of the president and his political groupies who might represent the general American public. Do they really care. Hell no! Try writing a letter complaining about social issues to the senate and see if you get a response.
On the other hand... does the American public really care about what these politicians do? Or is there not much involvement in this case?

Sigh!
( I am speaking for the UK here )
To me , it is the nature of the beast !
Most politicians, think of but one thing , once they are elected !
Self enhancement !!!!
Most do not even bear , loyalty to the party they represent !
The voters are only of value, when polling day comes around .
promises and good intentions, are all swept under the carpet after that day .
Only to resurface,
when popularity is again required .( ie. voting day looms large)
Then sweetness and light and promises abound anew .....
Sorry to sound so cynical , but that is how they appear to me

People have always worked for their self-interest (It's what makes the world productive). Why would you think they would stop doing that just becasue they hold elected office?

Because the people don't agree, so why do you expect the politicians to?

because almost all of them don't care about the people, then only care about themselves and what they can get out of from being in office.

because they really don't care bout all the people, just
their constituents and lobbyists
if politicians cared, their wouldn't be houses covered with
tarps in Florida from 3 hurricanes ago...
