I think emo stands for emotional. Some people consider bands like Taking Back Sunday and Finch emo.

Having a cousin who calls herself "emo" I can tell you it stands for emotional (that emotion being melancholy). Emo as a trend stems from emo music - Dashboard Confessional is one band that uses that term to describe themselves; whereas bands like Panic! At The Disco are called emo but dislike the term.

Most emo followers dress somewhat gothic style, and males and females alike wear eyeliner, sometimes thick-rimmed glasses, and smooth, in-your-face haircuts, and accessorize with black clothing, wristbands, and many men wear pants fitted for women (very slim and close-fitting).
