Even though I am nominating this man because I agree with nearly all his beliefs and positions, I think Sam Brownback, (R, KS) is one of the most, if not the most honest politicians of this time, and is not afraid to speak his mind on all of the most important issues.

Another politician who has more integrity than most is Christopher Shays (R, CT).

As I recall, Bill Bradley, one-time presidential nominee, dropped out of politics altogether because he found it impossible not to compromise himself. Maybe the last honest politician.

As for today's politicians, our mayor in NYC Mike Bloomberg, is so rich.....:), he doesn't have to politic, lie to, or for, anybody. And he's a great mayor without an ego. What a breath of fresh air after Guiliani.

And if the truth had been known about Abe, it would not be "Honest Abe".

Saw something on Discovery/History channel the other week about how during the Civil War, Abe would send federal agent to close down newspapers who were writing bad stories about him and how the war were going.

Honest politicians usually only get elected as local selectmen or town board members.

An honest politician would never be elected President, people don't want the truth and if they got it they wouldn't believe it.

Ok, I know ONE politician who was honest and I had a deep respect for.

You could probably Google him though I'm not sure what you would find.

Wendall H. Ford. Democrat from Kentucky.

I'm a staunch Republican but voted for him in every election until he retired a few years back.

He is a good man, an honest man, and great role model. There just aren't enough like him, these days.

I want to believe most politicians are people first, honest at heart. Most come from humble beginnings and define their character as they progress up the political ladder. The problem is, that to be successful, they often have to spend more time raising money than they do serving the people.

Andrew Johnson

With the Assassination of Lincoln, the Presidency fell upon an old-fashioned southern Jacksonian Democrat of pronounced states' rights views. Although an honest and honorable man, Andrew Johnson was one of the most unfortunate of Presidents. Arrayed against him were the Radical Republicans in Congress, brilliantly led and ruthless in their tactics. Johnson was no match for them.

Jimmy Carter

"Many area residents say they can’t wait to shake the hand of the man who, according to one local supporter, "was honest but had a lot of tough luck as a President."

No - No and No. The words honesty and politician are oxymorons and can't be used together. It's like "original copy" or "jumbo shrimp" and a lot of others - they just can't be used in the same sentence.

I think the nickname of "Honest Abe" was simply part of Lincoln's ingenious war time propaganda machine.
