I've always had nightmares on a regular basis. I can't tell you the last time I had a good dream. Years. But they seem to be getting more and more disturbing lately; more violent. That can't be healthy. Any ideas on how to make them stop?

Is there any chance you're eating and/or drinking and/or taking a medication that could be bothering your digestive system in your sleep and causing nightmares?

Is there any chance you're sleeping on a mattress that works away at you while you're sleeping? (They can feel fine until you've been on them for a few hours and in one position, but then they can make you have discomfort while you're asleep.)

Is there any chance you're "filling your head" with too much violent music, movies, television and/or books? Some people can be more affected by a diet of too much of this stuff than others.

Is there any chance you have any kind of breathing difficulty in your sleep, which could create a disturbing sensation in your sleep?

Is there something about your living situation that has you miserable?

Is there the chance some awful thing has been weighing on your subconscious and showing up in your dreams? (If there's a chance of this you should see a therapist to work it out.)

Other than addressing the above issues, the only thing that may possibly make them stop is to change your sleeping place or time or other habits. If you sleep flat, try propping your head up. Change the lighting in the room or the temperature. Try putting some really relaxing music on. If you do something like drink tea or soda before bed stop because they can cause heartburn (which causes nightmares). If you go to bed early try staying up an extra hour. (If your sleep is disturbed with bad dreams you aren't getting the benefit of it anyway.) If you're laying in bed awake for more than few minutes before sleeping try staying up until you know you're "pass out" almost immediately.

You should probably, though, see a physician and discuss all the nightmares. There's a chance you could have some subtle medical condition (or not so subtle one) causing these bad dreams.

We have nightmares because we are trying to work out some emotional issue in our waking life. Each dream offers a solution or a new perspective on a problem or troublesome relationship. The nightmare gets our attention. We're likely to have a recurrent nightmare when we don't address the issue and make a change. Nightmares stop when we understand what we need to do AND make that change.

Sometimes, people end up making a change in their lives (moving out of a parent's home, getting divorced, changing jobs) and discover their nightmares go away. In any case, they DID something to change their lives.

Watching a scary movie might contribute to the content of a nightmare or the specific imagery, but that's not why you had it. If something in a movie turns up in your dream, it means it SPOKE to your feelings and concerns in a personal way and you used it to continue working on the problem.

The symbols in your dream are your own, often used idiosyncratically, and not something you can look up in dream dictionary.

I'm afraid there is no magic way to get rid of nightmares. Did something happen that might make you have these nightmares? If that is the case, you should try and forget the specific thing that caused the nightmares. Apart from that though, if they are still bothering you, you should see a psychologist who may be able to help you.

You seem to be afraid of certain things and keep worrying about unknown things before you hit the bed.

It is advisable to read something light or listen to the music you like. Or even try yoga and meditation.

Count the 'imaginary sheep jumping over the fence' or count the stars in the sky.

All the best

For years id dream of demons. they were terrifying. I got real into dream books and learned a trick, that works. The demons, monsters or rapists, whatever it may be are actually YOU. But if you stopp running and ask them what they want they will tell you and leave you alone. My dreams are usually lucid so it was easy for me to train myself. So, I remember one inparticular I asked the demon why? And it said"I hate you" And went away. It is possible this is a mind over matter deal but hit works every time. After a few months of this, these dreams became less and less. And now most of my dreams are sexual.

Try to understand the fears and the events in your dream. It suggests that you might be holding on to upsetting or guilt based conflicts. You may have a lot of powerful negative feelings that require understanding.

I had nightmares myself for years when I was younger. I think relaxing your body & mind can help. Try exercising and do some light yoga to slow down your thoughts.

Try to control the demons within. You do this by acknowledgment of them. Different from acceptance. Unless of course you think you are immune to evil. Remember that evil works best on the non believer.

Meditation. It calms the mind, and through practice it will carry over to your sleeping hours.
