There is a gadget on the wall that says damper remote control and has closed,1/3, 2/3 ,open.Anybody know what this operates and what the setings should be set too? Thanks in advance

thats a setting for the fire,if you want a blazing fire open all the way if you want a fire burning more slowly put it on 2/3 setting and if you want a small fire burning set it on the 1/3 open. never burn a fire with the damper closed

It has to do with how much air is let into a heating/air conditioning unit. It controls exhaust, air circulation, etc. It's adjustable because there isn't one correct setting for all circumstances. If you're renting, you should check with your landlord.
