Ok il start by saying that you should not give him a hard time for "not doing research", thats why he is HERE asking a QUESTION, for all you gods that know the answers to your questions I beg of you to publish a book with all your knowldge and leave this site.

To answer your question, no Karma is VERY different, first of it wasn't initiated by Hinduism like someone said, it was started by Siddartha Gautama in the 6th century before christ (2500 years ago), and is an idea more closely related to Buddhism.

The things is that Karma pretains to everything, not just bad things, but everything you do in your life. In Buddhism there is no belief in a God, simply the laws of cause and effect, this causes that, negative energy returns as such, weather in this lifetime or the next, sins in the other hand are very specifc, and its more like some one is watching you.

The reason the notion of Karma has been adapted in the West is because of Buddhism's highly philosophical and intellectual principles, this causes many westeners, particularly the "new age" which is fed up with monotheistic dogma, to be attracted to it. Most of them dont truly understand what Karma means, its a very deep law, the ONLY law which governs the universe, very complex (according to Buddhism of course)

Karma is a very much older notion than sin. And Christianism or
Islam, and derivates, a digest version of vedantas. While Karma is seen as a primitive explanation of the logical effect action-reaction, without moralism in it, Sin represents (bad) action = (bad) reaction = punishment. And 'dark years', as you call it, are the Era we are both living in. Today, new age we call it because it's ours, there's a quite bizantine and victorian polemic goin' on about stem cells treatments as an advanced therapy or an ethical transgression, call it sin. It's the bad conscience punishment, or psychological Cainism, against science or call it... wisdom. Or common sense. It's thesis agaisnt hypothesis.

Why would you think that modern society isn't still using the idea of sin. Last time I checked, there were a lot of Christians out there, and they typically still believe in the idea of sin.

Of course, there's always original sin like "I poked a badger with a spoon." (See Eddie Izzard)

The idea of karma in modern society is just loosely thrown around. And typically having bad karma won't mean that you'll spend an eternity in the fires of hell being torn apart by demons jsut to be put back together again and keep suffering...

Okay, enough Dante for now....

The new age movement has brought karma back to the surface. The concept has been around longer than the idea of sin.
But to answer your question. I think they are pretty much equivalent. They both scare you into doing good with the threat of punishment.
As a human it's your responsibility to good because it's the right thing to do, not out of fear or hopes for reward.

The idea of Karma has been around since very ancient times. There is good karma and bad. Basically, it means "what goes around comes around." If you do something good, you will have good karma. If you do something bad, you will receive your comeupance!

Hardly...Karma has been around for thousands of years. Have you not learned how to use the net for research yet? Ask real questions and quit wasting our time.

no karma is basically cause and effect. Ever action has a reaction. Sin is an intentional action taken against God.

Karma has nothing to do with sin per se...I agree that you may need to go back and really study what you are asking....
