Open a window in the bathroom. If you have a fan, place it in the doorway and point to towards the window so the odor will be carried out instead of into the house. An exhaust fan would also work, but close the door if you go that route. The same applies if you use the air conditioner fan.

Do not spray anything to cover the scent. It's not the odor itself, but the chemical in the bleach fumes that are making you sick. Spraying deodorizers could make it worse. Never mix any other household product with bleach, because it can create potentially lethal chlorine gas. Just let it air out and avoid the area as much as possible until it does.

You do need good ventilation. Bleach is a wonderful cleaner, but a little goes along way. The less you use, the less the aroma. Open all windows, turn on all fans before during and after cleaning. Put a small amount of bleach in hot water and proceed with your cleaning. When you are done and leave the bathroom, shut the bathroom door to keep the smell from permeating the entire house.

When I renovate bathrooms, the bleach on mildew/mold is what I have found causes a serious gas which must be avoided, as you now know. I have also found that the mold and mildew removers will sometimes be a safe and effective cleaner also. The area that was cleaned, in most cases can be wiped down with mild soap and water to remove the bleach. The bleach is a corrosive to some chrome/brass fixtures and will leave permanent pitting.
1/4 bleach to 3/4 water is usually a fairly safe mixture. Wear old clothes and wipe your feet well before leaving the bathroom. NEVER MIX AMMONIA AND BLEACH!!!!!

Close the door, open the windows and turn on the exhast fan and let it be for about an hour or so. It will take time for the smell to go away completly but this should help. In the future dont clean with bleach or if you do all you need is one capful to a gallon of hot water.

First, open all the windows. We live on the coast- lots of mildew- so we have to use bleach to clean everything. This has happened to us before. Water really helps to. I normally do cold water so the bleach smell doesn't turn to steam & start waifting through the house. You really can't mix anything with the bleach other than the water because any other chemicals will cause a reaction similair to a toxic ammonia. The water should really help, just douse the area really good & leave it standing for a little bit.

As you may know now that you've experienced this, chlorine bleac while it is a great cleaning agent, can is somewhat toxic, even at the concentration found in bleach. If used in confined spaces, it is pretty nasty. You MUST use proper ventilation. If you don't have the fan that pulls air from your bathroom, I suggest a small portable fan the next time you use bleach

Do not use bleach full strength. It is used sparingly and in diluted form. Adequate ventilation should be present when using cleaning chemicals. Read the instructions on the label for proper use.

You could try re-rinsing with a solution of vinegar and water, or just open a window and let the room air out.
