There is still crime in London and more bomb threats than in the U.S,I think the camera is overused and many things do not get detected.
Who can sit there for hours and watch "EVERYTHING".

Depends really on what you are doing and where you are. If you are a worker in central London, as mentioned above its on average of 300 times a day.
However, if you are in and out of train stations, up and down Oxford Street and Regent Street, in and out of shops, you could be caught on camera some 5000 times.

That doesnt however appear to deter yobs.....I work in Chelsea, near the Kings Road and Sloane Square, in the past three weeks there has been 2 fatal stabbings, 4 non-life threatening stabbings, the local tesco to where I work was robbed a gun point last week, a post van was hijacked, a securior van was robbed and police are looking for witnesses with big yellow boards up everywhere...so it doesnt necessarily deter the criminals. A new statistic to all these crimes also is they were all carried out by white men......of eastern european discent. Go figure.

they recon about 500 to 3000 times for those working in the streets, or visiting tourists. Many are captued as they commute into work, and back again. Each traffic lights, station and even the buses now have them in them. Then you have the security cameras built into shops, and ATM's before you get to the high street systems.

The police have traffic monitoring cameras every half mile on the major roads, and even little cameras built into their uniforms now. Then you get accidental caught by traffic wardens who use images to record their victims, and many others using their mobile phones for pleasure.

Away from the major cities it drops down to a few hundred times a day in smaller towns, and a couple of times a day on the rural roads.

However, only about 10% of these images are actually put onto a tape, which is kept for one week, in case of incidents.

That would on home long they spent outside the house.

Surly if they stayed indoors, with no recording equipment then it would be not at all.
