In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Dumbledore has to drink the liquid in the basin in the cave in order to reach the Horcrux. Could he not have simply scupped it out with the cup and spilled in on the ground? I'm sure JK had a reason why he couldn't do this but why didn't she make that clear. It annoys me because obviously that is what weakens Dumbledore and leads to his death.

I agree, JKR really should have included a paragraph stating that Dumbledore tried to tip out the liquid to no success because it does look as if he was suicidal in how he jumps straight to drinking it.

Obviously, we know that there would have been a spell put on the basin to prevent someone just tipping the liquid out because even Voldemort is not that stupid but making it clear would make for a better scene. It would enhance Harry's helplessness when he knows he has to feed Dumbledore the liquid because there is no other choice.

To quote:
"[Dumbledore] raised his wand and made complicated movements over the surface of the potion, murmuring soundlessly..."
Then he says...
"But how to reach it? This potion cannot be penetrated by hand, Vanished, parted, scooped up, or siphoned away, nor can it be Transfigured, Charmed, or otherwise made to change its nature."

Voldemort made it so that the only way to get rid of the potion was to drink it. True, he does scoop it up with a goblet to drink it, but since Dumbledore has already done his complicated spellwork over it, I think it safe to say that trying to just dump it out wouldn't have worked.

I also wouldn't say that the potion is what leads directly to his death. He was weakened physically, yes, but I don't think he would have fought Draco or Severus unless something went very, very wrong.

it does weaken dumbledore but i think the reason that he drank the liquid is because it was a fake horcrux, i feel harry is the last one, and that is why he drank the stuff, to see how harry responded. but wait until june/july to find out the next book is coming out soon.
